PSHE

Curriculum Intent

Inspire children to become confident, caring individuals who are motivated to make positive choices for themselves and others.

Impart knowledge about health, relationships, safety, and personal growth so pupils can navigate life with understanding and confidence.

Develop Communication so pupils can express feelings, solve problems, resolve conflict, and communicate kindly and effectively

Be Inclusive where every child feels valued, respected, and able to celebrate differences within the school and wider community.

Promote Citizenship and Spirituality so that children are responsible, thoughtful citizens who contribute positively to their community and have space to reflect on values, wellbeing, and personal identity.

Curriculum Implementation

At St Cecilia’s C of E Primary School we value PSHE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning.

We include the statutory Relationships and Health Education within our whole-school PSHE Programme.

To ensure progression we use Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, as our chosen teaching and learning programme and tailor it to our children’s needs.

There are 6 units (puzzles) that the children study throughout the year and are designed so the whole school can study the same learning themes at the same time, each year group at its own level. The Puzzles are sequential and developmental throughout each academic year. The puzzles are:

- Being me in my World - Includes understanding my own identity and how I fit well in the class, school and global community. Jigsaw Charter established.

- Celebrating Differences - Includes anti-bullying (cyber and homophobic bullying included) and understanding

- Dreams and Goals - Includes goal-setting, aspirations, who do I want to become and what would I like to do for work and to contribute to society

- Healthy Me - Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices, sleep, nutrition, rest and exercise

- Relationships - Includes understanding friendship, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills, bereavement and loss

- Changing Me - Includes Relationships and Sex Education in the context of coping positively with change

Curriculum Impact

Assessments of the children's knowledge and and understanding will be ongoing through the year. This takes the form of observations, discussions and written outcomes.

The impact of the PSHE curriculum can also be seen through the day to day interactions that the children have with each other and staff. Children will be able to show respect for themselves and others, manage emotions, develop healthy relationships and have a good knowledge of protected characteristics and British Values.
