Curriculum Intent

Inspire - To develop a curiosity about the past and how it has shaped the world we live in today.

Impart Knowledge - Have an understanding of how and why the world has evolved over time and the significant events and changes.

Develop Communication - Use historical language to engage in meaningful discussions and articulate viewpoints.

Be Inclusive - Ensure that all children have access to the full curriculum using well chosen resources and scaffolds. Children build respect for different perspectives, cultures and experiences.

Promote Citizenship and Spirituality - develop and understanding of how people and societies have changed over time in terms of morals, faith and behaviour.

Implementation

Our curriculum for History matches the expectations of the National Curriculum but has been adapted to meet the aims of our curriculum.

The curriculum is structured around 6 historical concepts:

1) Chronology and continuity - Understanding the sequence of events and identifying and discussing patterns of things that changed and things that stayed the same.

2) Cause and Consequence - Looking at the causes of certain events and the short and long term impact of these.

3) Similarities and Difference - Looking at what is the same and different between people, groups and experiences.

4) Historical Significance - Looking at what makes events, people and experiences significant in History.

5) Sources and evidence - Using different sources to answer question and form interpretations of the past.

6) Historical interpretation - Exploring how historians create different accounts of past events.

We have then developed 3 Substantive concepts that streamline the knowledge that we are giving to the children and these include:

1) Power - This focuses on themes such as Invasion and empire and considers the continuous power struggles through time.

2) Civilisation - This focuses on settlements, towns and cities and the development of farming, language and arts.

3) Beliefs - This focuses on the religions and beliefs that have run through history.

The children study 3 units a year and these can be found in the subject overview.
